Disney’s California Adventure Park

After re-doing my Restaurant Reviews page to match my Recipe Tab, I realized that we never finished discussing Disneyland last November because I became distracted by my gluten free road trip.

So, now we’re going to rewind to last November, just a few days before the Inaugural Avengers Half Marathon. It’s a beautiful fall evening, and we’re ready to enjoy a meal at Carthay Circle Restaurant in the heart of California Adventure.

Carthay Circle Restaurant is on the second floor of this detailed reproduction of the iconic Carthay Circle Theatre.

The Basics: Disney’s price tag ($$$, $30 to $59.99) serves American Cuisine in a sit-down manner. Annual pass holder discounts available. We did the World of Color Package- a fixed price 3 course meal with an array of selections, which was also modified to meet my celiac and allergy needs.

(Although, you’ll be dressed in the clothes you wore through the theme park all day… aka: less elegant.) The original, Carthay Circle Theatre, is where the Snow White and Fantasia both premiered. Therefore, the framed pictures throughout the restaurant also share a story as you sit down to enjoy your meal.

A Look Inside

Now, on to the service, in Disneyland I found the level of allergy awareness to be a little variable depending on the restaurant when compared to Disney World. However, I had a phenomenal experience at the Carthay Circle. We first discussed how the kitchen is (clearly) not gluten free, but the steps they would take to avoid the introduction of allergens.

Next, as we reviewed the ingredients in the salad dressing, they asked if I was okay with citric acid because some celiacs prefer not to have citric acid if they didn’t know its origins. While I don’t want to get into the citric acid debate, it showed a great level of understanding in the kitchen. However, I understand that if you were working with a different chef or manager, your might may go slightly differently. Nonetheless, I was very impressed.

And, last, but certainly not least the food. It was easy to work with the chefs because the menu already identified which allergens were in certain dishes. Therefore, I knew if we were only trying to get rid of gluten, dairy, eggs, or all three when modifying a dish before the chef arrived.

I began with a modified autumn salad. I loved the crispness and fresh flavors of the dish. Not to mention, the dish is colorful. It was a refreshing way to begin my course.

Modified Free Range Chicken Breast

The chicken was well prepared and seasoned. My favorite part of this dish was the richness of the sauce without being to heavy. It added enough flare that I felt as though I was truly enjoying a meal out.

BERRIES!

Some of you may squirm that I just got berries for dessert, but that’s frequently MY choice. I frequently become sick of sorbet, the common gluten and dairy free option. And, most of the fancier ones involve tapioca starch, egg, etc. Nonetheless, I was glad to join in on the final course with the rest of my party. And, really, who can decline to a bowl of fresh berries?

World of Color Show

I loved the World of Color Show. You can of course go without a Disney Dining package, but it just made it easier to show up later. Last November, we saw the Holiday edition hosted by Olaf himself! You can read more about it in my post Christmas in Disneyland 2014. But, for now, we’ll end with a few snapshots of the evening.

You can play a game on your phone before the show starts. And, if you win, you get to pick the colors on the Wheel of Color!
