Learn to Celebrate Sister’s Day in GF Style.
P.S: Happy Birthday Week Bri!

Most major holidays revolve around food: turkey at Thanksgiving, a roast at Christmas, and even BBQ on the 4th of July.  So, when a diagnosis of Celiac Disease or any other allergy comes, these joyous occasions can add on an extra headache for many families.

In our household we try to keep these holidays just as festive, but in an allergy free setting.  Did I mention that I have a very supportive family?

One of our most successful modifications was last August for Sister’s Day.  (Apparently, this is now a national holiday, but we started celebrating it back in elementary school!) Every year growing up, my sister and I would decorate an Oreo pie crust filled with ice cream or sorbet.  Oreo?! That’s a Celiac nightmare!

We didn’t want to let this tradition fall by the wayside.   Instead my sister daringly agreed to make cookie dough pies using a batter she already loved (from my Cookie Dough Balls). And, it was a success!

Our Recipe:

  1. Make a batch of allergy friendly cookie dough!
  2. Place muffin cups inside a muffin pan.
  3. Coat the inside of the muffin pan cups with cookie dough.
  4. Place in the freezer for 30 min – 1 hr. (Mold the crust if necessary due to initial stickiness of the dough).
  5. Fill with ice cream or sorbet. (It helps to soften it first).
  6. Place in freezer until ice cream hardens.
  7. Peel off the wrapper.
  8. Eat and enjoy!

Your tradition may not be as simple as cookie dough pies, but with a bit of creativity I’m sure you can find a new allergy friendly treat.  As for us, we’re excited to try out some new flavor and combinations next year!

And, most importantly, Happy Birthday Bri!
