DIY Microwave Popcorn

Have you ever read the back of a popping corn bag? It gives you directions on how to make your own popcorn on a stovetop or in the microwave and it’s super easy. Seriously, you should check it out and stop buying bagged popcorn.

The last time I made my own popcorn was when I was growing up on the stovetop. It was one of my favorite childhood activities. But it wasn’t until recently that I saw this video on my aunt’s Facebook page from The Loop showing us just how easy it is to make your own popcorn in the microwave!

And after watching this video it’s even easier! You don’t need a microwave safe container or any fancy popping oil, you can use a paper bag and olive oil instead. And, I had to try this out myself!

Looks pretty good to me!

When I first tried it my brown paper bag wasn’t big enough for a 1/3 cup of kernels, but I quickly realized you don’t really need measurements to follow this recipe. So, I just cut it down a bit. While I’m still having a few difficulties with the seasonings sticking to the bag, it’s nothing a few shakes can’t fix.

So I’m deeming this video a winner. And, pretty soon, I’ll hopefully have come up with a few tasty favor combinations. (Don’t worry they’ll still be gluten free and probably vegan too.) In the meanwhile, here is the general guidelines that I followed (measurements really aren’t necessary because the popcorn won’t pick up the excess oil).

IngredientsDIY Microwavable Popcorn

  • Popping Kernels
  • Olive Oil (or another oil)
  • Salt
  • Brown Paper Bag
  • Paper Towel

  1. In a small bowl mix popping kernels, olive oil and salt. The amount of popping kernels will depend on the size of the paper bag, but start with a third of a cup. Coat in olive oil (which will be around 1 tbsp). And, make your own call on the salt.

Measuring it out with a tbsp. the first time because I'm traveling and didn't bring any measuring cups!

  2. Pour into a paper bag, and add a dash more salt. Fold the bag TWICE to seal.

P.S: If you can’t shake it up well, then just add in some extra seasoning at the end, as it tends to stick to the side of the bag.

I’m not saying that you need to convert your whole popcorn diet to this new trick, but I found it to be extremely cost effective and just as tasty as microwave popcorn I buy. Plus, I don’t have to read the list of a thousand ingredients to see if it contains gluten or any of my allergens.

I’m of course bringing this snack to the party over at Fiesta Friday, although I’m sure a bunch of you already know this easy trick. Thank you so much to Naina @ Spice in the City and Julianna @ Foodie On Board for co-hosting. AND I can’t wait to experiment with this recipe more and give y’all some flavored DIY microwave popcorn recipes!

Happy Cooking!
