The Journey to Healy’s Corner (Carmel, NY)

Last weekend we moved my sister into her first apartment, and it went beautifully! On our eight hour drive back up the east coast, I wanted to stop at a new gluten free place. As y’all know 100% GF restaurants, diners, etc. are the best for those with celiac disease.

I spent our drive glued to my Find Me Gluten Free app. Every time a new “dedicated gluten free” restaurant popped up, I called. And every time, they were closed. Not that I mind, I think it’s great to give your workers Labor Day off. It was simply inconvenient timing.

As we were about to enter Connecticut, I was more than ready for lunch when a restaurant that 14/14 individuals rated “celiac friendly” popped up! While not 100% gluten free, the reviews included phrases such as “very knowledgable on celiac,” “dedicated fryer,” and “brought out ketchup packets to help protect me from cross contamination.”

We decided the restaurant was worth the fifteen minute detour to check out. A meal, a car ride, and a reflection later I present my review of Healy’s!

Lake Carmel, NY

On our detour to Healy’s we ended up in Carmel, NY. Before you arrive at Healy’s you drive by a beautiful lake, Lake Carmel. We stopped to take pictures when the address on Find Me Gluten Free brought us to an empty spot on the road. However, after quickly plugging the restaurant’s name into Google Maps we traveled one more mile down the road to arrive at Healy’s!

Healy's in NY and Find Me Gluten FreeIf you can’t tell from the picture, Healy’s doesn’t stand out as a place where you would pull off the side of the road for a meal. With only two cars in the parking lot, we were hesitant that they were open. But, as we walked in, we were greeted by a friendly bartender.

The inside of Healy’s is much like a traditional bar and pub with a little bit of a musty smell. I was excited because it’s been ages since I got to eat anywhere with a similar atmosphere. (In fact, it was 2012, just before my celiac symptoms reached their peak while I was studying abroad in Ireland. What better place to study Irish music than in the pubs themselves?!)

“Items on this menu do not contain any gluten ingredients. We have a dedicated fryer for the following menu items: French fries, sweet potato fries, regular wings, corn tortillas & GF chicken tenders.”

Once we sat down, I flipped through the menu to the back page, where there was an entire gluten free menu with a wide range of options. While reading over the menu, I informed my waiter that I had celiac disease. Fortunately, he was very comfortable with celiac disease because his brother was diagnosed eight years ago.

(I always say that I have celiac disease rather than refer to myself as gluten free. If the waiter/manager/chef doesn’t know what I’m talking about THEN I worry, ask even more questions than normal, and probably don’t eat there. Of course, I don’t mind if they say “gluten allergy” in the kitchen to ensure that my meals are safely prepared.)

Now, my waiter and I talked about my food allergies, etc. before I ordered the grilled chicken lettuce wrap without the muenster cheese and peppers.  AND, my side of choice was the sweet potato fries made in the dedicated fryer.

Do you see my ketchup packets in the background?! Such a perfect way to help minimize the risk of cross-contact with gluten!

I devoured all the sweet potato fries within moments of my plate being delivered to the table. Then, I moved on to the MASSIVE lettuce wrap! The spiced chicken is contained within two pieces of lettuce. Once I got a grip of the whole thing, it was delicious to say the least. All and all it was a great meal, and they even had an option of 4 gluten free beers!

At the end of the meal, I had a wonderful conversation with our bartender/waiter about celiac disease and gluten free products. We talked about the improvement over time, and he recommended Glutenberg for beers, so if you haven’t tried it yet, give it a shot!

The Recap

Healy's in NY and Find Me Gluten Free

We stopped at an awesome farm stand on our way out of town too!

Healy’s Corner Restaurant and Bar has a friendly bar atmosphere and serves delicious food as safe as it gets when it comes to shared kitchens. I always prefer restaurants when they’re the least crowded, which appears to be lunchtime here. Only my mom and I were in the dining room at lunch, but it looks as though it’s quite an active place at night. Maybe head over at night to grab a GF beer?

For my Fiesta Friday friends, this weekend I’ll be traveling again. In fact for a whole week, as I travel around the country for weddings and to reunite with old friends! What are your plans for the weekend?

Want to know what I’m up to, or any gluten free finds? I’ll be on Twitter as always!

Have a Great Weekend Everyone!

P.S: Apps like Find Me Gluten Free work because WE post the reviews. The more reviews the better. I think it’s particularly helpful to include details that let other people know the precautions the restaurant takes too, so set up an account and start reviewing!
