Palæo Review (100% Gluten Free in Copenhagen)

Visiting Copenhagen?! Right next to each other on Pilestræde 32, you’ll find two dedicated gluten free restaurants- 42Raw (which we reviewed a couple weeks back) and Palæo. And, they’re just a brief walk from Strøget, one of the longest pedestrian shopping streets in Europe.

The shirts at Palæo and 42Raw (respectively) are very similar. Clearly, they’re paying attention to each other.

To begin, Palæo is an easily accessible restaurant for an English speaker. Their menu comes in English and Danish, and their website may also be easily translated by clicking on the globe in the upper right hand corner of the page. The staff was also able to answer questions I had about my food allergies in English, which was especially helpful!

Palæo also aims to provide a healthy, fast food option. This is especially nice when you’re dashing between tourist attractions. You can learn more about their specific philosophy on food called Primal Gastronomy on their website. But, note, that all the food here is gluten free (as of November 2015).

Fast Food: You order up at the counter, and then your meal is delivered to your table.

They offer a wide array of beverages- juices, shakes, smoothies, coffee, and more. My sister and I both loved our juices (pictured below). They had just the right amount of sweetness and the perfect thickness (not to thin AND not too thick).

If you find the right flavor combo, you can add ginger to any juice. (Ginger is one of my favorite things to add to a morning juice!) We personally liked the enhanced taste of mint in the blueberry smoothie, so we didn’t add any ginger. 🙂

While we didn’t try them, the shakes and smoothies sounded like they had some tasty flavor combos. All the smoothies are thickened with avocado, and all the shakes are made with full fat milk, banana & protein powder.

The seating can fill up quite quickly if there’s a large party, but we always found a seat.

Now, this is a restaurant, so they also serve food as well. You can order a wrap (made with eggs), signature dish, and dessert. I ordered the Bolo both times because it was just that good. A Bolo is vegetable spaghetti with a spicy meat tomato sauce, topped with homemade cashew-parsley pesto.

While the food at Palæo is healthy, it’s still tasty and not as extreme as trying to eat raw food. My meal was plenty filling. In fact, the following day I was going to a party where I was packing my own food, and I came here for lunch just so I would be plenty full before the celebration. (I would have eaten this even if I didn’t have any dietary restrictions, so I recommend it to anyone!)

While summer is the most popular time to visit Copenhagen and for good reason since I hit a snowstorm during my visit, I loved being able to meander and find Christmas markets on every corner. I certainly recommend considering a visit in late November/December. (I probably wouldn’t come back once the markets are closed and it’s still cold in January/February though!)
